Depreciation

How depreciation works

Depreciation is the decline in a vehicle's value over time. It is a normal part of ownership, and understanding it helps owners set realistic expectations.

01

Why vehicles lose value

Age, accumulated mileage, wear, and newer model releases all contribute to depreciation. The pace is often steepest in the early years of ownership and tends to slow afterward.

02

Mileage and condition

Two vehicles of the same year and model can have different values because of how far they have been driven and how well they have been kept. Condition is often described in grades such as excellent, good, fair, or rough.

03

Things owners can track

Keeping simple records can make value conversations clearer:

  • Odometer readings at regular intervals.
  • Dates and details of maintenance and repairs.
  • Photos of the vehicle's condition.
  • Receipts for parts, tires, and upgrades.
