Vehicle Value
Understanding vehicle value
A vehicle does not have one single value. Different terms describe different ways of looking at what a car is worth. Knowing the vocabulary makes it easier to read documents and ask better questions.

01
Market value
Market value generally describes what similar vehicles are selling for in a given area at a given time. It shifts with supply, demand, season, and local conditions.
02
Actual cash value and replacement cost
Actual cash value is a term often used to describe a vehicle's value after depreciation is considered. Replacement cost generally refers to what it would take to replace the vehicle with a comparable one. Definitions vary, so the wording in your own documents is what matters.
03
What tends to influence value
Several factors are commonly considered when a vehicle's value is discussed:
- Mileage relative to the vehicle's age.
- Overall mechanical and cosmetic condition.
- Trim level, options, and equipment.
- Accident and repair history.
- Maintenance and ownership records.
- Regional demand for the model.
